About this edition

Artist Film Festival IX, the ninth edition of the BF Artist Film Festival, is premiering at The Gregson Cinema in collaboration with GRAFT Lancaster. As part of the broader Pixelache festival context, the programme continues the festival's work of showing short moving image works to audiences in a cinema setting, where each film can be screened in its entirety.

Selected through the festival's international open call, the programme brings together films from artists at different stages of their practice, with a focus on current technical approaches to moving image work.

Collaboration

This edition is presented in collaboration with GRAFT Lancaster, an artist-led space in Lancaster, one of the partner venues working with the BF Artist Film Festival. About the festival. The BF Artist Film Festival was established in 2016 and is curated by Beth Fox, giving artists working with moving image the opportunity to have their films screened in a cinema setting, engaging new audiences and providing varied screening opportunities for early and mid-career artists nationally and internationally.

About the festival

The BF Artist Film Festival is a critical platform for artists working with moving image, offering screening opportunities to early and mid-career artists nationally and internationally. Each edition brings together selected short works across experimental, narrative, documentary, essay, animation and collage forms, curating a programme that treats the moving image as a living artistic practice rather than a finished product. Beyond the screenings, the festival functions as a network: a place where emerging voices are introduced to audiences, peers and institutions within the wider contemporary media arts community.

This ninth edition, Artist Film Festival IX, premieres at The Gregson Cinema in collaboration with GRAFT Lancaster, sitting within the broader Pixelache festival context. The programme continues the festival's work of showing short moving image works to audiences in a cinema setting, extending a conversation that has run through previous editions at venues across the country. Involvement in an established festival context means the works are encountered alongside other commissions, installations, performances and research projects, giving curatorial ideas a wider frame in which to resonate.

Presenting work in a cinema also allows the festival to consider time, space and attention as curatorial materials, and to place artists alongside a wider culture of shared viewing. Screenings create a common room for audiences, critics, programmers and peers, opening discussion about practice, process and the conditions of production. For artists in the early and middle of their careers, such settings offer recognition, conversation and possible routes towards further opportunities, while remaining open and accessible to anyone curious about contemporary moving image work.
